Dixie Carter has died at the age of 70. Carter’s role as Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women made her a much beloved and iconic figure in the world of entertainment. She also appeared in such hit television shows as Diff’rent Strokes, Family Law and Filthy Rich. Carter was nominated for an Emmy award for her guest-starring role as Gloria Hodge on Desperate Housewives.
In addition to her various television roles, Dixie Carter also starred in several Broadway musicals and plays, most recently as diva Maria Callas in Terrence McNally’s Master Class. Her last film role was in the 2009 movie That Evening Sun with her husband, Hal Holbrook. The film won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature and a special Jury Prize for Ensemble Cast at the South by Soutwest film festival.
