One of todays biggest trends was the arrival of the news that Moammar Gadhafi is now dead. It is been proved that he was killed in his last battle between their group and their enemy.
The grisly scenes of Gadhafi’s body being dragged through the streets of Sirte, and the unseemly celebrations of the Libyan dictator’s death in the Western media, are enough to make any decent person wince. Yes, he was a brutal dictator, and I hold no brief for him or his works, but is this kind of savagery really what we want to see in the “new” Libya?
Whether or not we want it, it is coming: the crew in charge of that unfortunate nation is no better, and perhaps worse, than Gadhafi. The fate of the rebels’ former commander-in-chief, Abdul Fatah Younis, prefigures a revolution that eats its own, and the ferocity of that revolutionary fervor is hardly abated.
Gadhafi loyalists include the largest tribe in the country, and after the smoke clears and the new regime extends its grip over dissident pockets of resistance, nostalgia for the relatively peaceful days of Gadhafi’s reign is more than likely to set in. Worse, the arsenals of the Libyan military have been systematically looted, with missiles and other sophisticated weaponry falling into the hands of radical Islamist militias. These militias are not fringe elements in the Libyan revolution, but rather they are in charge, with one of their number taking the place of the slain Younis as head of the rebel “armed forces.”
Indeed, the rebels’ military leadership consists largely of members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), which is still prominently featured on our official list of designated terrorist organizations. Now we are allied with them — under a new name, the “National Transitional Council” – and US taxpayer dollars are pouring into their coffers. That money will be used to consolidate the rebels’ rule, a regime that promises to be every bit as repressive as the one that preceded it – albeit friendly, at least at first, to its Western sponsors.

San Francisco Earthquake
San Francisco of todays news is now experiencing a total earthquake making a big damage. San Francisco experienced a magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck the Bay Area Thursday afternoon, causing no known damage but leaving a spray of tweets in its wake. The quake struck. It is a trend of todays news.
The quake struck the Hayward fault line near Berkeley at 2:41pm local time, but was felt across San Francisco — interrupting VC meetings, podcasts and general productivityas the city rushed to share its experience on Twitter. One user noted the gently swaying artwork at the San Francisco MOMA.
As many tweets pointed out, the timing was appropriate: California had just conducted a statewide earthquake drill earlier in the day.
Twitter is fast becoming the earthquake service of record, as was seen during this summer’s Virginia earthquake and the horrific magnitude 9.0 that caused so much devastation in Japan in March.
As a now-famous xkcd cartoon noted, the speed of the Internet means it’s becoming increasingly common for Twitter users in outlying areas to read about quakes before they experience them.

Minority Teachers
In line with its goal to improve the education system in the US, the Obama administration reiterated the need for minority teachers that will help the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
The government first announced its plans to hire more minority teachers last March following a set of recommendations for President Obama given by the White House Initiative on AAPIs through the Department of Education.
“It is important to recruit more teachers who are representative of the student populations they serve and who are trained to educate diverse student populations,” the Education Department stated in its report.
“While AAPIs comprise 3.9% of the total enrollment in public elementary and secondary schools, they represent only 1.5% of teachers,” the report released last March said.
The Department of Education said it will increase the number recruitment activities targeted at AAPI teachers starting in the school year 2011.
To achieve this, it will forge partnerships with schools and other organizations in areas where there is a high AAPI population. At the same time, it will also meet with AAPI leaders throughout the country to inform communities about its recruitment efforts.
During the conference last May 4, Secretary Duncan said a third of the more than 3 million teachers in the US are set to retire in the next six years.

Pacquiao Wins Against Mosley
LAS VEGAS – The pound-for-pound king wasn’t his usual self inside the boxing ring but Manny Pacquiao did more than enough to dominate Sugar Shane Mosley for 12 rounds in their title bout Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Pacquiao knocked down the 39-year-old Mosley in the third round and had the aging former champion in retreat mode soon thereafter to successfully defend the World Boxing Organization (WBO) championship.
All three judges scored unanimously in favor for Pacquiao, who extends his winning streak to 14. Pacquiao hasn’t lost a bout since 2005.
The fight against Mosley wasn’t vintage Pacquiao but don’t blame the Filipino Congressman. Many in the sold out pro-Pacquiao crowd of more than 16,000 wanted an exciting bout but all they got was Mosley seemingly more interested in surviving and leaving the ring on his two feet and with his ego – and legacy - intact rather than engaging against the aggressive and oft frustrated Pacquiao, who kept going for the knockout.
Mosley, who has never been knocked out in his long career, admits he didn’t want to take any risks in the bout especially after suffering a knock down in the third round.

The Dukan Diet
The French Atkin's-Like Weight Loss Method- Dukan Diet.
The Dukan Diet has taken France by storm, selling 3.5 million copies in 14 different languages and being hailed as a life-long weight loss answer.
But many Americans have ever heard of it.
Well they will next month when the diet books make their American debut, according to the New York Times. Dr. Pierre Dukan, the diet's creator, sold the North American Rights for $1.3 million up front.
But the diet may be nothing more than a glorified Atkin's impersonator.
According to the New York Times article, the diet has become such a staple of French culture that almost any public figure that loses weight is labeled as a "Dukanniste," including Carole Middleton, the mother of Kate Middleton. There have been rumors that the princess-to-be is also on the diet in preparation for the royal wedding, according to ABC News.
Critics claim it's really nothing more than a fad. Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center, called it the new fad diet for 2011. According to CBS, many critics even believe the diet may be wholly unhealthy and unsustainable.

News For Haiti
The world is still assessing the scale of destruction and human loss following in the wake of last week's giant earthquake in the Caribbean nation of Haiti, early estimates placing the death toll as high as 100,000 people.
Shocked by the horror of the quake and mindful of Haiti's pressing need for aid, charities and international organisations are ramping up their efforts in the hope of preventing further horrid losses.
Game developers are doing their bit, too, PopCap donating a day's proceeds from their PopCap store to the aid effort, while Bungie are urging players to show their support in Halo 3 by wearing a Haitian relief emblem.
For every 1000th player wearing the badge (up to 77,000 USD), Bungie will donate 100 USD to the Red Cross, with special T-shirts also being sold.
Social media developers Zynga, meanwhile, are opening a World Food Programme fund with 100 percent of the profits going to Haiti.

The Situations
The Situations Attempts To Roast Donald Trump On Comedy Central.
"Maybe comedy ain't my game right now." Truer words were never spoken, neither by man nor meathead.
The question is not whether Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino will be funny on the Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump. (You have one of the most laughable personalities in the history of television on stage next to real comedians...whatever happens, it will be funny.) The question is whether or not The Sitch (let's face it, the man is in dire need of a diminutive) will know why people are laughing at him or not.
We were there, so we know how it went down. But instead of ruining the surprise (plus, you never know what can happen with the magic of editing), we'll just whet your appetite with this clip Comedy Central already released. This is at the end of the distinguished gentleman from New Jersey's set, when Jeffrey Ross felt moved to intervene.

Virginia Tech
NEW YORK - Perhaps the NCAA tournament selection committee confused Alabama-Birmingham with Alabama, and Virginia Commonwealth for Virginia Tech.
The two bubble teams from power conferences were passed over Sunday in favor of a pair of mid-major teams from their very own states. The Crimson Tide and Hokies were relegated to the NIT, giving the consolation tournament its deepest field in years.
Alabama and Virginia Tech were joined as No. 1 seeds by Colorado and Boston College on Sunday night, two more teams that had high hopes of playing in the NCAA tournament. They'll host first-round games Tuesday and Wednesday, with the championship game March 31 in New York City.

The Passion Of Joan Of Arc
It's the 1928 silent film directed by Dreyer. For some reason my Shaw Digital onscreen guide is calling it Joan of Arc but that's a mistake.
TCM is showing a string of movies about Joan of Arc tonight, but this one's the gold standard - as great a movie as you'll ever see, silent or otherwise.

Polygamy's Strange Charm- Sister Wives Season 2
Since “coming out” to the world as Mormon polygamists on TLC’s reality series Sister Wives, the Browns have had their share of growing pains. The biggest, they say, was adjusting to new wife Robyn. In January, the family packed up and moved from their spacious home in Utah to Nevada. In their new community outside of Las Vegas, they don’t have a church, and it’s been a challenge finding a home that can fit all 21 of them. Currently, they’re scattered among four different houses, one for each wife: Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn.
The separation is only temporary, until they can build their own polygamist-style house with separate living quarters for each sister wife. And “there have been a lot of benefits,” Janelle said about the show.
On a recent afternoon, the family lounged in a suite at their hotel across from Central Park after appearing on the Today show the day before. Meri and Christine laughed about never going outside anymore without doing their hair and makeup. Robyn, looking a little worn out, was curled up under her coat on the couch next to Christine. And Kody, in jeans and striped button-down shirt, reclined in an armchair opposite Janelle. Polygamy aside, the Brown clan looks no different from your average Mormon—or Midwestern—family. They wear jeans and T-shirts (no Temple garments required) and have modern haircuts. Their kids are allowed to watch television, surf the Internet, and play video games, and some have attended public schools. And with boyish Kody as the patriarch, the Browns are a far cry from the terrifying images broadcast during the 2008 raids on Warren Jeffs’ Yearning For Zion ranch in Texas.

CBS Sports
CBS Sports Turns NCAA Tournament into Child’s Play.
My 9-year-old daughter isn’t exactly the biggest sports fan in the world. But I plan on making her watch the NCAA tournament with me. At least the early rounds, thanks to the tournament’s new broadcast setup. Traditionally, CBS has televised the entire tournament from start to finish which is quite an undertaking — especially during the first round of the tournament when there are a grand total of 32 different games — 16 on Thursday and 16 on Friday.
But this year, there will be four separate networks broadcasting that first round: CBS, TNT, TBS and truTV. In years prior, CBS would toggle the viewers between games, meaning they would switch from one to another if there was a blowout, or whenever something compelling was happening with a specific game. But now, the job of toggling will no longer belong to CBS execs. It’ll belong to the viewer. And that’s where my daughter will come in handy.
I’m very excited for the new setup. It’ll be way better than the old one. It was always frustrating when CBS would cutaway to another game if you were a big-time fan of one of the teams playing in the game that the network suddenly dissed without warning. In recent years, there’s been a solution for that — watching your game of choice on line. But regardless of connection speed, the feeds were usually a bit jerky. Plus, there’s no substitute to watching a game on TV.
Still, as annoying as the cutaways could be, I always thought CBS did a pretty good job with them. Thanks to them, you felt as if you’d seen every single one of the 32 games in the first round by doing nothing other than sitting on your sofa for a couple of days. Now, to get that same feeling, you’ll have to become a master of the toggle.

"Sister Wives" -- Gather Round, We're On TV!
Let's hope Kodi Brown has a big couch -- because he's gonna round up his four wives and 16 children so the whole family can watch the premiere of "Sister Wives" together!
The Brown family has been making the rounds promoting tonight's premiere on TLC, but we're told whole family has returned to Las Vegas to watch the show.
A fight over the remote would be epic.

Lisa Rinna Got Fired!
When Celebrity Apprentice began, many had marked down contestant Lisa Rinna as one of the front runners. She’s bright, energetic and focused. But she was fired in just two episodes. And it came as a surprise, a big suprise…why?
The losing team, headed by Lisa Rinna, were sent to the boardroom to meet with the Donald. Many are thinking Dionne Warwick should have been the one to get fired, she didn’t contribute much in this last challenge. And Star Jones? She is playing for keeps. She basically manipulated Lisa into taking on the role of project manager, ensuring that her competition would be fired. And Starr Jones ploy? It worked. And those teammates of hers, they threw her under the bus.
Do you think it was Lisa’s time to go? Or should she should have stayed?

Plutonium
"Plutonium's half life is 24,000 years ... anything released in Fukushima today could be around at dangerous levels for up to half a millon years."
There are four kinds of isotopes that are likeliest to be emitted by the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant, as well as the other three that have been taken offline: iodine-131, cesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium-239. Iodine-131 is, in many ways, the most dangerous of the four, because it can lead to cancer — specifically thyroid cancer — in people exposed to it in the shortest time. Epidemiologists estimate that there were 6,000 to 7,000 cases of thyroid cancer that never would have occurred as a result of the 1986 Chernobyl explosion in Russia. Most of the victims were people who were children at the time of their exposure and developed the disease later.
Strontium and cesium are the next up the danger scale. While iodine tends to concentrate its damage to the thyroid, those two are not nearly so selective. "Strontium is chemicaly similar to calcium," says Dr. Ira Helfand, a board member for Physicians for Social Responsibility. "So it gets incorporated into bones and teeth and can stay there, irradiating the body, for a long time." Strontium is most commonly linked to leukemia.
Cesium works in other ways, behaving more like potassium when it's inside the body — which means it circulates everywhere and can contaminate anything. Cesium doesn't linger as long as strontium does — it gets excreted in urine over the course of months or years — but that's more than long enough to cause cancer of the liver, kidneys, pancreas and more. "Basically all of the solid tumors," says Helfand.
More troubling, cesium and strontium linger not just in the body, but in the environment. Strontium has a half-life of 29 years; cesium's is 30. A radioactive isotope is generally considered dangerous for 10 to 20 times its half life, which in these cases tops out at about 600 years.
Most worrisome of all is plutonium-239 — for a number of reasons. First of all, the vast majority of a fuel rod is made of plutonium, which means there's just more of it in play. What's more, says Helfand, "It's extraordinarily toxic." Plutonium exposure usually comes from inhalation rather than ingestion, so it's mostly associated with lung cancer. What's more, plutonium's half life is 24,000 years, which means anything released in Fukushima today could be around at dangerous levels for up to half a millon years.

The Atomic Clock
An atomic clock is a clock that uses an electronic transition frequency in the microwave optical, or ultraviolet region[2] of the electromagnetic spectrum of atoms as a frequency standard for its timekeeping element. Atomic clocks are the most accurate time and frequency standards known, and are used as primary standards for international time distribution services, to control the frequency of television broadcasts, and in global navigation satellite systems such as GPS.
The principle of operation of an atomic clock is not based on nuclear physics, but rather on atomic physics and using the microwave signal that electrons in atoms emit when they change energy levels. Early atomic clocks were based on masers at room temperature. Currently, the most accurate atomic clocks first cool the atoms to near absolute zero temperature by slowing them with lasers and probing them in atomic fountains in a microwave-filled cavity. An example of this is the NIST-F1 atomic clock, the U.S. national primary time and frequency standard.
The accuracy of an atomic clock depends on the temperature of the sample atoms—cooler atoms move more slowly, allowing longer probe times, as well as having reduced collision rates—and on the frequency and intrinsic width of the electronic transition. Higher frequencies and narrow lines increase precision.
National standards agencies maintain an accuracy of 10?9 seconds per day (approximately 1 part in 1014), and a precision set by the radio transmitter pumping the maser. These clocks collectively define a continuous and stable time scale, International Atomic Time (TAI). For civil time, another time scale is disseminated, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). UTC is derived from TAI, but approximately synchronized, by using leap seconds, to UT1, which is based on actual rotations of the earth with respect to the solar time.

Brooke Shields
Brooke Shields, Who Do You Think You Are?
The following is the fifth in a series of celebrity roots profiles from the first season of NBC's Who Do You Think You Are? Though it's not the part of her ancestry that was featured in the show, Ms. Shields is part Irish, so this seems to be an appropriate time to share her tale, given that March is Irish-American Heritage Month. Previous profiles can be found on Lisa Kudrow, Emmitt Smith, Matthew Broderick and Spike Lee.
Brooke Shields made her showbiz debut in Ivory Soap ads at the age of eleven months. By the time she entered Princeton at eighteen to study French literature, she could already look back on a celebrated career as a model and actress. Since then, we've continued to follow the stunning six-footer on stage and screen, as well as in the pages of magazines and her memoir.
Brooke's early years may have appeared glamorous to the outside world, but few knew of her life behind the scenes. Brooke's parents, Frank Shields and Teri Schmonn, divorced by the time Brooke was six months old. As Brooke explains, they could not have been more different. Her father, Frank, was from "aristocracy, old money, and Park Avenue," while her mother, Teri, came from a family that was "working class and saving every dime." Little wonder that Brooke claims she never knew where she truly belonged and felt "split down the middle."
Her early entrance into the world of adult responsibilities coupled with her divided family forced her to become self-sufficient. Unable to connect with her divided family, Brooke focused on her career. But her perspective changed with 9/11. Brooke was performing in Cabaret on Broadway at the time. Seeing so many families lose their loved ones made her keenly aware of the importance of family.
When approached about researching her roots, she decided the time was right. She would finally look into her divided family, starting with her mother's side. Teri was raised in Newark, New Jersey, but left as soon as she could. Brooke suspected that this was partly due to her grandmother Theresa, who treated Teri unkindly. Brooke disliked her grandmother; she found her "bitter, sad, and afraid," so she was curious to find out if Theresa's past could explain the reasons behind her bitterness. Brooke's knowledge of her maternal family was slim. All she knew was that her grandmother had a younger sister named Lillian and that their maiden name was Dollinger.
At the New Jersey State Archives, Brooke found Theresa's birth certificate, which showed that her grandmother was born in 1908 to John and Ida Dollinger. But it was Theresa's sister's birth certificate that raised questions. Lillian was born in 1915, but her record indicated that she was the fourth child, not the second as expected. Who were the other siblings? More digging revealed a pair of brothers born in between the sisters: John and Edward. Sadly, John lived only one week, but what about Edward? Why had her grandmother never mentioned him?
The discovery of John and Edward was the first in a series of revelations about Theresa's life. Her mother, Ida, passed away in 1919, leaving ten-year-old Theresa to step into her shoes. As the oldest, Theresa had to cope with her mother's death while becoming a mother herself to her younger siblings. How shattering it must have been, then, when Edward died in a drowning accident in 1927. To seventeen-year-old Theresa, it must have felt like losing both a son and a brother.

Former McCain Campaign Chief: Sarah Palin Made 'Short List' Because Of Gender.
In a profile of the man who was responsible for vetting a running mate for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) during the 2008 presidential campaign, the former manager of the political operation is mentioned suggesting how Sarah Palin landed on the then-candidate's "short list," Ben Smith reports.
In the story featured in the latest edition of the Washingtonian on attorney A.B. Culvahouse, which is currently unavailable online, the one-time campaign manager for McCain suggests Palin made the cut because of her gender. According to an excerpt of the story relayed by Smith, McCain had requested that at least one woman be included on the list of possible contenders.
"As the clock was running out, [campaign manager Rick] Davis says McCain asked to have at least one woman on the short list. His advisers went back to the long list and plucked out Palin's name," the magazine reported.
When Palin's name was raised as a possible running mate, she reportedly joined the ranks of former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, former Florida governor Charlie Crist, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Senator Joe Lieberman, who were considered as potential picks.
While some have attributed McCain's 2008 loss to Palin's role in the campaign, Culvahouse himself said months after the election that he believed the former Alaska governor would have been prepared for the job. HuffPost's Sam Stein reported in April of 2009:

Justin Bieber Rascal Flatts “That Should Be Me” Video, Lyrics
Watch the Justin Bieber Rascal Flatts “That Should Be Me” video, a powerhouse combo of the country group Rascal Flatts and teen phenom Justin Bieber.
The Rascal Flatts “Nothing Like This” special featured special guests Natasha Bedingfield and Justin Bieber.
Check out the Rascal Flatts / Justin Bieber “That Should Be Me” lyrics and music video below.
Rascal Flatts singer Gary LeVox spoke about the duet with Justin Bieber, saying that his daughters “flipped out” and that he’s “in the running for dad of the year” after working with Bieber.
LeVox added, “I’ve even got a low-grade Bieber fever!”
Rascal Flatts and Justin Bieber That Should Be Me lyrics:
“Everybody’s laughing in my mind
Rumors spreadin’ ’bout this other guy
Do you do what you did when you did with me,
Does he love you the way I can?
Did you forget all the mem’s that you made with me
Cause baby I didn’t
(Chorus)
That should be me holding your hand
That should be me making you laugh
That should be me this is so sad
That should be me that should be me
That should be me feeling your kiss
That should be me buying you gifts
This is so wrong
I can’t go on
‘Til you believe that
That should be me
That should be me
You said you needed a little time for my mistakes
It’s funny how you used that time to have me replaced
Did you think that I wouldn’t see you out at the movies
What you doin’ to me
You’re taking him where we used to go
Now if you’re tryin’ to break my heart
It’s working cause you know that
That should be me holding your hand
That should be me making you laugh
That should be me this is so sad
That should be me that should be me
That should be me feeling your kiss
That should be me buying you gifts
This is so wrong
I can’t go on
‘Till you believe
That should be me
I need to know should I fight for love
Or disarm
It’s getting harder to shield
It’s breaking my heart
Ooooh
That should be me holding your hand
That should be me making you laugh
That should be me this is so sad
That should be me that should be me
That should be me feeling your kiss
That should be me buying you gifts
This is so wrong
I can’t go on
‘Till you believe
That that should be me
(Holding your hand)
That should be me
(The one making you laugh (oh baby oh)
That should be me
That should be me
(Giving you flowers)
That should be me
(Talking for hours oh)
That should be me
That should be me
That should be me
Never should’ve let you go
I never should’ve let you go
That should be me
I never should’ve let you go
That should be me.”

Naked protest in Ghent And Its Videos.
Last week some students got together in Ghent and stripped down to their underwear to draw attention to the nation's serious political problems. They certainly drew a lot of attention, but I suspect that the political message got a bit scrambled through the filter of indecent exposure.

Which do you think is more effective: underwear protests, beard-growing, free fries, or a sex ban?

This Is War
'This Is War'- Michael Moore To Rachel Maddow On Wisconsin.
On her Wednesday show, Rachel Maddow and filmmaker Michael Moore both agreed that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and the state's Republicans will lose what Moore called a "class war" being waged against the working class.
The two were reacting to Wednesday's sudden passage of a measure in the Wisconsin Senate to strip public employees of their collective bargaining rights--something only accomplished through an unheard-of parliamentary maneuver.
Before bringing Moore on, Maddow said that the Wisconsin Republicans had awoken a "dragon." And she sent a message to the Democrats as well. "When people who have to work for a living are directly attacked...they fight back," she said. "And they are expecting the Democratic Party to stand with them."
Moore then came on the show. He told people to go to Madison right away. "This is war," he said. "This is a class war."
He also expressed optimism about the outcome of the Wisconsin fight. "Everything has turned in favor of the working people," he said.
Maddow said that the "political brittleness" of what Walker and other Republicans were attempting was working against them."All it takes is some political pushback against that and it collapses," she said.

"Two and a Half Men" Is Better Than None
I read in the paper today that Conan O'Brien's documentary is out this weekend. The one that chronicles the purportedly healing journey/concert tour he went on after his messy divorce from NBC. I also read that Charlie Sheen is suing Warner Brothers for $100 million and the two of these things reminded me of one of the more character-building experiences that I had in my career, many years ago.
People often ask me why I never continued in the role of Jack Ryan in the movies based on Tom Clancy's great novels. Usually, I have given a half truth as an answer, something about scheduling conflicts and so forth. But the truth is the studio cut my throat. Or, more specifically, an executive at the studio named David Kirkpatrick who was, as studio executives are on their way both up and down the ladder, eager to prove he had that special quality that studio executives are eager to display. That quality is an utter lack of sentimentality while transacting deals around a business built on sentimentality.

Wisconsin GOP Senators Pass Stand-Alone Anti-Union Bill Without Democrats Present.
WASHINGTON -- In a bold gambit to put an end to the weeks-long budget standoff in Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker (R) split his controversial budget-repair bill in two on Wednesday, allowing the Senate to pass the most hotly contested provisions while their 14 Democratic colleagues remained out of state.
The parliamentary maneuver, first reported by local press, enabled the Senate to strip nearly all collective bargaining rights from public workers without the quorum required to approve fiscal legislation.
It was also a 180-degree reversal by Walker and state Senate Republicans, who have insisted for the past three weeks that the collective bargaining provision was designed to help alleviate the state’s budget problems. State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R) had previously said he would not attempt to pass any portions of the bill without Democrats present.
Wisconsin Democrats decried the move as an unprecedented and blatant end-run, but it was clear that they were powerless to stop it. Indeed, it took the conference committee only a matter of minutes to pass the severed off measure by a four-to-two vote. Minutes later, the same bill passed through the entire Senate by an 18-1 margin, with Sen. Dale Schultz, a Republican moderate who had proposed a compromise measure, lodging the only no vote.

8.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan 2011
8.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits, 30-Foot Tsunami Triggered- Japan Earthquake 2011.
TOKYO -- A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded slammed Japan's eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away boats, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control.
Hours later, the tsunami hit Hawaii and warnings blanketed the Pacific, putting areas on alert as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast. In Japan, the area around a nuclear power plant in the northeast was evacuated after the reactor's cooling system failed.
(SCROLL DOWN FOR THE LATEST UPDATES)
Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture (state) closest to the quake's epicenter. Another 88 were confirmed killed and at least 349 were missing. The death toll was likely to continue climbing given the scale of the disaster.
The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks for hours, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0.
Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter. A large section of Kesennuma, a town of 70,000 people in Miyagi, burned furiously into the night with no apparent hope of the flames being extinguished, public broadcaster NHK said.
"The earthquake has caused major damage in broad areas in northern Japan," Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference.

Charlie Sheen Not Dead, But Virus Spreads On Facebook.
Be careful. A virus is spreading rapidly, primarily through Facebook, claiming that Charlie Sheen is dead.
The dangerous posts, which have also popped up on Twitter, typically start, "Exclusive Video," "RIP!" or "Breaking News." They go on to say "Charlie Sheen found Dead at his House" or some variation and include a link to a site that appears to be fueling the rumor.
Even ZDNet appeared to be victimized by the scam, tweeting yesterday, "Exclusive Video: Charlie Sheen found Dead at his House! http://zd.net/fOpMY2" That link now goes to a dead page.

David And Victoria Beckham
The Beckhams are thinking pink.
The bundle of joy David and Victoria expect this July is a baby girl, PEOPLE has confirmed.
The soccer star, 35, announced the news Friday afternoon at an L.A. Galaxy fan luncheon, ESPN reports.
"Obviously, we're very lucky to be expecting again, and this is the first time I'm going to say it: It's a little girl," Beckham shared.
"We're still in shock. Obviously, having three boys, you kind of expect another one, so finding out a little girl is in there is surprising, but, obviously, we are over the moon," he added. "Our three boys are happy and excited, and Victoria is doing well."
In February, the fashion designer, 36, insisted she didn't yet know the sex of her fourth child, but said she'd be happy with either.
"We know what to do with boys," said the mother of sons Cruz, 6, Romeo, 8½, and Brooklyn, 12. "But, if it's a girl, we'd be over the moon as well."

Japan Nuclear Plant Explosion
Earthquake Death Toll Rises- Japan Nuclear Plant Explosion Raises Fears Of Meltdown.
IWAKI, Japan - An explosion at a nuclear power station Saturday destroyed a building housing the reactor, but a radiation leak was decreasing despite fears of a meltdown from damage caused by a powerful earthquake and tsunami, officials said.
SCROLL DOWN FOR LIVE BLOG
Government spokesman Yukio Edano said the explosion destroyed the exterior walls of the building where the reactor is placed, but not the actual metal housing enveloping the reactor.
That was welcome news for a country suffering from Friday's double disaster that pulverized the northeastern coast, leaving at least 574 people dead by official count.
The scale of destruction was not yet known, but there were grim signs that the death toll could soar. One report said four whole trains had disappeared Friday and still not been located. Local media reports said at least 1,300 people may have been killed.
Edano said the radiation around the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant had not risen after the blast, but had in fact decreased. He did not say why that was so. The pressure in the reactor was also decreasing after the blast, he said.
The explosion was preceded by puff of white smoke that gathered intensity until it became a huge cloud enveloping the entire facility, located in Fukushima, 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Iwaki. After the explosion, the walls of the building crumbled, leaving only a skeletal metal frame.
Tokyo Power Electric Co., the utility that runs the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, said four workers suffered fractures and bruises and were being treated at a hospital.

No repeat of Chernobyl disaster for Japan-experts.
BRUSSELS, March 12 (Reuters) - Japan should not expect a repeat of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster after an explosion blew the roof off one of its nuclear power plants that had been shaken in a huge earthquake, experts said on Saturday.
Japan's Daiichi 1 reactor north of the capital Tokyo began leaking radiation after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami, and swiftly prompted fears of a nuclear meltdown.
But experts said pictures of mist above the plant suggested only small amounts of radiation had been expelled as part of measures to ensure its stability, far from the radioactive clouds that Chernobyl spewed out when it exploded in 1986.
'The explosion at No. 1 generating set of the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, which took place today, will not be a repetition of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster,' said Valeriy Hlyhalo, deputy director of the Chernobyl nuclear safety centre.
He was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying Japanese reactors were better protected than Chernobyl, where just over 30 firefighters were killed in the explosion. The world's worst civilian nuclear disaster, Chernobyl has also been blamed for thousands of deaths due to radiation-linked illness.
'Apart from that, these reactors are designed to work at a high seismicity zone, although what has happened is beyond the impact the plants were designed to withstand,' Hlyhalo said.
'Therefore, the consequences should not be as serious as after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.'
CORE INTACT
Japanese officials said on Saturday that the nuclear reactor's core was intact, and that sea water would be poured into the leaking reactor to cool it down and reduce pressure in the unit -- a statement that should calm any fears.
Experts said it was crucial to make sure the steel reactor container had not been shattered in the explosion or in the earthquake.
'If the pressure vessel, which is the thing that actually holds all the nuclear fuel ... if that was to explode -- that's basically what happened at Chernobyl -- you get an enormous release of radioactive material,' said Prof. Paddy Regan, nuclear physicist from Britain's Surrey University.
'It doesn't look from the television pictures ... as though it's the vessel itself.'
Television footage showed an explosion in a large building in the area of the number one reactor at the Daiichi nuclear facility. Grey smoke billowed from the site and later, a building was shown without its exterior walls.
Robert Grimes, professor of materials physics at Imperial College London, said earlier it had seemed that back-up generators had failed and had allowed pressure to build up.
'It does seem as if the back-up generators although they started initially to work, then failed,' Grimes told BBC television, adding that the explosion was probably the large release of that pressure.
'If it's that, then we're not in such bad circumstances ... Despite the damage to the outer structure, as long as that steel inner vessel remains intact, then the vast majority of the radiation will be contained.
Most experts said the relatively slight damage to the reactor was testimony to the improved security of nuclear power, something that has convinced more governments to adopt the technology in recent years despite environmentalists' concerns.
'We must remember that there are 55 reactors in Japan and this was a huge earthquake, and as a test of the resilience and robustness of nuclear plants it seems they have withstood the effects very well,' Regan said.

Arthur
R.I.P. Arthur.
Arthur magazine, which has long been one of my favorite publications, in print and online, is coming to an end. Publisher/editor Jay Babcock announced today that March 15 will be Arthur's last day. He says the archives will be available "as long as makes sense." Money is the issue, of course. (Though readers may cling to the memory that the magazine has wiggled out of tight corners before, including surviving a move to the East Coast (and back) and in going online.)
It was a beautiful portal into all kinds of mysterious, sometimes off-the-wall, sometimes visionary stuff. And known for its comics and MP3s. It began in 2002.

Yogi Berra
Yogi Berra back at the ballpark.
TAMPA, Fla. – Yogi Berra is back at the ballpark.
The 85-year-old Hall of Famer was at George Steinbrenner Field on Friday for the Yankees spring training game against Atlanta, one day after he tripped and fell in the clubhouse while going to get a bowl of a soup.
"I didn't like the soup," Berra said.
The Yankees spring training instructor caught one of his sneakers on the carpet and fell at Philadelphia's complex, where the Yankees played the Phillies on Thursday. Berra went by ambulance to the hospital as a precaution after landing on his backside and was released about four hours later.
"He's great," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He's the same."
Berra, who normally travels to away games with Girardi, didn't accompany the manager for Friday's road split-squad game against Toronto.
"He doesn't have road pants, today," Girardi said

Tokyo, Japan Disneyland
Tokyo Disneyland has suffered damage in parts of its campus in the 8.9 magnitude quake that rocked Japan early Friday.
According to Thedisneyblog.com, the 69,000 guests in the park at the time of the quake were stranded due to transportation being affected in the aftermath. The guests were quickly evacuated to safe areas and given supplies.
Photos of the park’s destruction appeared on Twitter of guests camped out in the common areas of the park. Twitter user Rezaikram tweeted that guests were provided with “disposable heaters, plastic bags, and rain coats.”
The blog also reports that liquefaction, or large puddles, have destroyed the Tokyo Disneyland parking lot. The DisneySea expansion area has also affected by liquefaction.
Disney parks entertainment executive Steve Davison reported that the guests at the Tokyo Disneyland Resort are safe after an initial evacuation and have been allowed back into their hotel.
The main impact of the earthquake and tsunami was 200 miles north of the resort. The theme park will remain closed through the weekend. No injuries have been reported.

Elisabeth Rohm
ELISABETH Röhm has opened up about her undergoing fertility treatments to conceive her little girl.
The actress — who’s best known for her role as Serena Southerlyn on Law & Order — is mom to 2½-year-old daughter Easton August with fiancé Ron Anthony.
“There are certain experiences that almost every woman looks forward to as a right of passage. Pregnancy is one of them. To me, it’s as big as death, and it seems like an impossible situation when you discover that you will not give birth in your lifetime — or if you do, it will be after extensive medical assistance and cost a small fortune,” she told People magazine.
“It is devastating when you simply can’t do it the natural way and your body can’t function as you believed that it would during your whole young adult life.
“I never thought I’d come out and talk about my experience with in vitro fertilization (IVF). It’s not that I’m shy or hugely private — it mainly comes from the subject being socially taboo and very personal. As a woman who has had to receive assistance to be able to carry a child and deliver a healthy baby girl, I am grateful that I had the right to make a choice for my family and regarding my own body.

Prince Charles
LONDON - Prince Charles could be forgiven for feeling a bit grumpy these days.
Close to many people's retirement age, he's still waiting for the position he was groomed for: King of England. And he's preparing for the wedding that will make his eldest son Prince William and Kate Middleton the fresh new faces of a monarchy sorely in need of renewal.
That leaves Charles, who once cut a dashing figure himself, something of a forgotten man.
He is sandwiched between his mother Queen Elizabeth II, treasured for her steadfast dignity and devotion to duty since her coronation in 1953, and William, who carries a hint of the late Princess Diana's glamour wherever he goes.
"He's in a very tricky position," said Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine. "By next year his mother will have been on the throne for 60 years, she's the only monarch many of us have ever known. When she came in, she was very young with two small children and there was huge empathy for her, but Charles won't get that when he comes to the throne."
He said the failure of Charles' marriage to Diana — and the role that his current wife, Camilla, played in that doomed union — has given the public too much information about the man who would be king.
"We've heard his private telephone conversations," Little said, referring to embarrassing intimate calls that were intercepted and published, giving Britons a glimpse into Charles' fantasies.

Mel Gibson Reaches Plea Deal in Domestic Violence Case.
Mel Gibson has reached a plea deal with prosecutors in his domestic violence case, The Associated Press reports.
Gibson, 55, was expected to be formally charged this week for misdemeanor battery against ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, but instead will appear in court to enter the plea and will avoid jail time, a source close to the case told the AP.
Woman believed to be Gibson's ex-girlfriend: You hit our baby while she was in my hands
"I know from almost 20 years as a criminal defense lawyer that sometimes justice can come for a client at too high a personal price," Gibson's lawyer, Blair Berk, said in a statement Wednesday. "That is particularly so for Mel, whose right to due process can only be exercised in this case with an enormous media circus attached. Mel's priority throughout all of this has been that the best interests of his young daughter Lucia and the rest of his children be put first in any decisions made. It is with only that in mind that he asked me to approach the district attorney with a proposal that would bring all of this to an immediate end."
Grigorieva accused Gibson of punching her in the head and face during an argument in January 2010. Gibson later said he did so to protect their baby daughter, Lucia, whom Grigorieva was holding.

Angelina Jolie
Lara Croft will be back -- but an actress other than Angelina Jolie will be shooting the guns and wearing those tight short-shorts.
GK Films and producer Graham King (The Departed, The Town) have acquired the film rights to the sexy videogame heroine, with plans to reboot the Tomb Raider film franchise, Entertainment Weekly reports.
PHOTOS: Angelina vs. Jen Aniston -- who's the biggest fashion icon?
A pre-Brad Pitt Jolie, now 35, played daredevil archaeologist Lara Croft in two 2001 and 2003 blockbusters. (The action-adventure flicks grossed $432 million worldwide; while the Lara Croft video games have sold over 35 million units since launching in 1996.).
The next Tomb Raider film, slated for 2013, will be a "reboot" featuring a "young and dynamic Lara Croft," according to the release posted at Deadline.com -- which likely puts Jolie out of the running for the role.
PHOTOS: Brad and Angelina's PDA-packed life
Not that Jolie is that interested. Back in 2004, when asked about becoming Lara again, she told website Ugo.com, "I don't think so. I just don't feel like I need to, because I felt very happy with the last one, which was kind of the one we wanted to do. The first one kind of frustrated us, because we were trying something new. The second one, I felt like that's kind of how I wanted to do it, and I don't really feel the need to do another one."
